Virgilio, Lombardy

Virgilio is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy. The community is located about 5 km south-southwest from the center of Mantua.

History

In the small village of Andes ( in the district Pietole [ Vecchia ] ), the Roman poet Virgil is supposed to be born. The community itself was formed in 1805 as Quattro Ville first of the districts Bellaguardia, Cerese, Parenza and Pietola and belongs since 1868 to the province of Mantua. The present name was given the community in 1901. Their present form ( three districts ) was created in 1925 to several territorial changes.

Economy and Transport

Smaller engineering firms and elastomer manufacturing dominate the local economy. Virgilio is on the Strada Statale 62, and on the Strada Statale 413, which leads to the Autostrada A22 from Verona to Modena. The nearest railway station is located in Mantua.
