Geographical Location

Wolter village is situated in the Wendland region east of the Elbe Valley Nature Park. The municipality is part of the velvet municipality Lüchow at (Wendland), which has its headquarters in the city Lüchow ( Wendland).

History

During construction work near the district of Lichtenberg on the edge of the island of Geest Öring 1986 soil discoloration and pottery shards were found. Excavations between 1987 and 1993 have revealed numerous stone tools, which dated to an age of 55,000 years and the Neanderthals were assigned. Probably it is a prehistoric hunting place. During the excavations there were also traces of a recent colonization of the area. It pottery shards have been found from the Early Bronze Age, the pre-Roman Iron Age, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. The findings of Lichtenberg are in the collection of the Urgeschichtsabteilung the Lower Saxony State Museum Hanover.

In the early presence of man in the area around the village Wolter also notes the discovery of a 50,000 -year-old hand ax. Another find is a gold ring from the late Bronze Age (ca. 1100-1550 BC).

At the time of the Germanic settlement of the tribe of the Lombards inhabited the area around Wolter village. After the barbarian invasions Slavs settled in this area in round villages, to which the name Wendland is due. On Slavic colonization indicates the " stone idols ", which was immured in the image of a face in the field church.

Wolter village was first mentioned in the 14th century. The earliest forms of the name were " Waltistorpe " ( 1371 ), " Wolterstorpe " ( 1395 ) and finally " Wolter village" in 1450.

Incorporations

On 1 July 1972, the municipalities Klein Breese, Lichtenberg and Thurau were incorporated.
