Yeniseysk

Yenisejsk (Russian Енисейск ) is a town with 18,766 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia, on the bank of the Yenisei. It is often referred to as the father of the Siberian cities because of their age.

History

Yenisejsk was founded in 1619 as a military fortress to the settlement of Siberia by Cossacks, received city rights in 1676 and became one of the most important trading centers in the early Siberia for gold and furs. In the area once 90% of Russian gold discoveries were made, which explains the ( once ) beautiful stone houses. In addition, the city served one and a half centuries as a gateway to Siberia.

Gained fame Yenisejsk by its churches and monasteries. Shortly after the birth of the Tobolsk -Siberian diocese in 1620 the Patriarch Filaret Romanov in Yenisejsk began to build churches.

Among the preserved architectural monuments of the city include: the Spaso- Preobrazhensky Monastery (founded in 1642), the appearance Cathedral ( 1738-64 ), Church of the Resurrection ( 1735-47 ), Trinity Church ( 1772-76 ), Uspensky church ( 1793-1818 ), the building of the Regional Museum of Yenisejsk ( 1747-53 ), the History Museum (1883 ) and others.

Yenisejsk served early on as a place of exile. Under Stalin, prisoners were shipped to the northerly Gulag sites. In 1953, a railway line from Krasnoyarsk to Yenisejsk should be built.
