Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai

Zheleznogorsk (Russian Железногорск; until 1994 Krasnoyarsk -26 ) is a closed town with 84 795 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in Russia. It is located in the Krasnoyarsk region in the Siberian federal district, about 60 km north-east of the regional capital of Krasnoyarsk near the Yenisei River. The nearest town is Sosnovoborsk, 16 km southwest of Zheleznogorsk. More to the town circle belonging places are Podgorny, Novy Put, Tartat, Dodonowo and Schiwera.

History

The town was founded in 1950, as here, the production of weapons-grade plutonium in the nuclear facility Zheleznogorsk (also " Mining and Chemical Combine ," Горно - химический комбинат called ) was built by the Soviet Ministry of Atomic Energy. The location of the plant was chosen for strategic and technical reasons: it is the country's borders far away, and for the treatment of cooling water of the Yenisei could be used.

1954 the site of the city status was awarded. The place name Zheleznogorsk founded the same year and means something like "city of iron mountains ". Because of the secret status of the nuclear industry, the city bore the Soviet era officially only the cover name Krasnoyarsk -26 and was found on any map. Economy and Transport

Of the nearly 100,000 residents of Zheleznogorsk employs about 8,000 people working in the nuclear facility. The other big industrial plant is the Reschetnjow Association for research and production, a manufacturer of communications satellites. About seventy percent of Russia's satellites were manufactured in Zheleznogorsk. In mid-April 2010, the last reactor Russia to the production of weapons-grade plutonium in Zheleznogorsk was turned off.
