Zollparlament election, 1868

The customs parliamentary election was held in 1868 in Bavaria, Württemberg and Baden, and in the southern part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse on different days in February and March of 1868. In this election, 85 South German deputies were elected for the German customs parliament. The countries of the North German Confederation were represented in Parliament by the inch 297 deputies who had already been elected in August 1867 with the election of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation and then automatically also members of the Parliament were inches. Overall, the Customs Parliament thus comprised 382 deputies.

Result

Overall, the opponents of a small German solution prevailed under Prussian leadership. Especially in Bavaria and Württemberg showed this tendency. In Baden and in Hesse won the Best National Liberal prussia. The most important political consequence of the election was that the Customs Parliament decreed the opponents of the policy of Otto von Bismarck a majority.

Elected representatives

In each of the 85 constituencies in southern Germany a deputy was elected by absolute majority vote. If no candidate in the first ballot won an absolute majority, a runoff between the top two candidates was performed. A full account of the election results by the parties or a unique party-political association of all candidates is not known.

Bavaria

The Kingdom of Bavaria sent 48 MEPs to the Customs Parliament. End of the 1860s competed in Bavaria two political camps:

  • The conservative, Catholic and large German -based forces that faced the small German policy of Otto von Bismarck negative and from which in 1869 the Bavarian patriot party emerged
  • Organized in the Bavarian Progress Party liberals who favor a rapid accession of Bavaria to the North German Confederation as a step towards a small German unification

The election in Bavaria on February 10, 1868 provided a clear victory of the anti-Prussian "patriots" who could win about twice as many seats as the Liberals. A third group of deputies was unique to either of the two camps. The following list contains the 48 Bavarian electoral districts with elected representatives and their political direction.

Baden

The choice of the Grand Duchy of Baden took place on 22 February 1868. National Liberal oriented small German MPs won eight seats; large German leaning Catholics and Conservatives six seats. Grand Duchy of Hesse

The choice in the provinces of Rheinhessen and strong castle of the Grand Duchy of Hesse took place on 28 February 1868. The province of Upper Hesse belonged to the North German Confederation and had already chosen in 1867, three members of the Reichstag of the North German Confederation, which automatically members of the Customs Parliament were. In Hesse won the 1868 National Liberal and bismarck friendly direction.The following list contains the six Hessian constituencies with 1868 elected members.

Württemberg

The choice in the Kingdom of Württemberg was held on 24 March 1868. The winners were exclusively anti-Prussian and German big -oriented deputies. The small German and German -oriented National Liberal Party could not win a single seat. The following list contains the 17 constituencies Württemberg with the elected representatives.
