Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caracas

The Archdiocese of Caracas (Latin: Sancti Jacobi Archidioecesis Caracensis o in Venezuela Spanish: Arquidiócesis de Caracas ) is a location in Venezuela Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Caracas.

History

The Archdiocese of Caracas was established on June 21, 1531 by Pope Clement VII with the Apostolic Constitution Pro Excellenti Praeminentia as Coro diocese and the Archdiocese of Seville is a suffragan. On February 12, 1546 Diocese of Coro was the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo is a suffragan. The Diocese of Coro was renamed on June 20, 1637 Diocese of Caracas. 1715 gave the bishopric of Caracas from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Curacao. On February 16, 1778 Diocese of Caracas were parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Mérida.

The Diocese of Caracas was elevated by Pope Pius VII, with the Apostolic Constitution Ecclesia universalis In regimine on 27 November 1803 Archdiocese. On March 7, 1863 the Archdiocese of Caracas were parts of its territory from the foundation of the diocese Calabozo. For more territorial concessions were made on 12 October 1922 foundation of the diocese of Valencia en Venezuela, on 21 June 1958 laying foundation of the diocese Maracay, on 23 July 1965 on the establishment of the Diocese of Los Teques and on 15 April 1970 on the establishment of the Diocese of La Guaira.

The Archbishop of Caracas is also Primate of Venezuela. Since 1961, all Archbishops of Caracas were created cardinals, so that Caracas is considered traditionally associated with the cardinal bishopric.
