Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maracaibo

The Archdiocese of Maracaibo (Latin: Archidioecesis Maracaibensis, Spanish: Archidiócesis de Maracaibo ) is a location in Venezuela Roman Catholic diocese based in Maracaibo. It comprises the eastern part of the Venezuelan Zulia State.

History

Pope Leo XII. founded the bishopric of Zulia on 28 July 1897 cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Mérida and it became the Archdiocese of Caracas, Santiago de Venezuela is a suffragan. On June 11, 1923, was part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Mérida.

On January 2, 1953, adopted the name, Diocese of Maracaibo, at. In the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums it was raised on 30 April 1966. In 1983, the Catholic University Universidad Católica Cecilio Acosta was established in Maracaibo.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • May 26, 1943 at the Apostolic Vicariate of Machiques;
  • July 23, 1965 to the bishopric of Barinas;
  • July 7, 1994. To the bishopric of El Vigia - San Carlos del Zulia
