1979 NHL Expansion Draft

The NHL Expansion Draft 1979 was held on 13 June 1979 by the National Hockey League. The draft was necessary, since the league before the 1979/80 season with the Edmonton Oilers, the Hartford Whalers, the Quebec Nordiques, and the Winnipeg Jets after From the World Hockey Association, which had these teams so far belongs to four teams has been extended.

Since the rights to Edmonton - star Wayne Gretzky were no NHL team, this was supposed to be moved to the Entry Draft by the Oilers team to be able to choose on the condition that each was the last one round in the NHL Entry Draft in 1979, allowed the team then keep the later superstar, however.

Expansion Draft: Each of the 17 NHL teams allowed 15 field players and two goalkeepers lock, so that they in the expansion draft were not available and could be selected by the new team.
