2000 NHL Expansion Draft

The NHL Expansion Draft 2000 took place on 23 June 2000 in Calgary, Alberta, instead. The expansion draft was held because the Hockey League NHL was increased by two teams and had to be filled with players the cadres of the newly formed teams Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild.

The rules

26 of the existing 28 teams in the league ever were allowed to lock a goalkeeper, five defenders and nine attackers or two goalkeepers, three defenders and seven attackers of their squad, so they could not be selected by an expansion team. The cadres of the Nashville Predators and the Atlanta Thrashers were completely blocked, since they existed only one or two years.

For teams that decided to take the variant with a locked goalkeeper, there was once no restrictions. Those opting for the variant with two locked goalkeepers had to make sure that another goalkeeper remains unlocked, who had completed a total of 25 games in the season 1999/ 2000, at least ten games or in the seasons 1998/99 and 1999/ 2000. Only games counted, in which the keeper was on the ice for at least 31 minutes.

Also, each team let a defender unblocked, in at least 40, or in the seasons 1998/99 and 1999/2000 was for 70 games in use in the 1999/2000 season. In addition, each team must have two strikers unlocked, valid for the same system.

52 players in total were selected in the draft, two of each existing team. From any of the established teams only a goalkeeper and a defender could be selected. Columbus and Minnesota had to select with their first 24 choices per 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders and 13 attackers. The remaining two choices for each team could be players from each position.
