1996–97 Russian Superleague season
The 1996/97 season was the first season of the Super League. The league title secured for the first time Torpedo Yaroslavl, while Spartak Yekaterinburg and Molot Perm - Prikamye descended into the Wysschaja league.

Main Round
Mode
The 26 teams in the Super League first played in the main round in a Western and an Eastern Conference with jeweilis 13 teams, each team played 24 games season. The top ten teams from each conference who qualified for the final round, the 16 top-ranked teams to qualify for the play-offs. The last three each conference had to play against the best four second division in a double round to avoid relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
