2008–09 Slovak Extraliga season

The 2008 /09 Slovnaft Extraliga is the 16th regular hosting of the top division of Slovakia. Reigning champion of Slovakia is the HC Slovan Bratislava. Up in the Extraliga is the first champion league, the HC 05 Banská Bystrica.

Game Mode

For the new season of the game mode, the League was changed: After a preliminary round, each consisting of 24 home and away games for each participant, followed by a two-part intermediate round. For the first group, the teams qualify in positions one to six ( automatic qualification for the play- offs ), all other teams play in the second group to the remaining two places in the second round of the play-offs. The four teams that do not participate in the play-offs, playing from a play -down round. Followed by a League relegation between League Extraliga and 1, where the last placed the playdowns against the master, and the penultimate play against the runner-up of the 1st league. The U20 national team - under the name HK Orange 20 - does not participate in the relegation.

In addition to changing the game system awarding points also is changed: Teams that lose in extra time or penalty shoot- get, instead of now no one point.

Regular Season

Both the preliminary round, as well as the masters round was dominated by the two top clubs in Slovakia, the HC Kosice and the HC Slovan Bratislava. Above all, the team from Košice showed both offensively and defensively outstanding achievements so that they achieved at the end of the season both the most goals, as had also received the fewest goals and could have a positive goal difference of 88. In the Master round the team built this relationship in only ten games to 101 from, where they only suffered one defeat after extra time.

The HK 36 Skalica managed in the Meisterrunde a similar winning streak and moved up from fifth to third place to the front and had thus in the playoffs right home. In the League Relegation between Extraliga and 1 league the last placed the relegation round, the MIC SkiPark Kežmarok met the master of the first league, the HK Ves ​​. In this case, the latter prevailed over the team from Kežmarok, an increase after six years and again in the Extraliga, while the MIC SkiPark Kežmarok descends into the second division.
