New Format

The format was introduced mainly due to the significant 7-1 victory Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings from the previous year against the All- Star team. But the 2-2 draw between the two All-Star teams took care of criticism and the introduction of overtime was required.

The first All- Star team consisted of players from American teams, while the second was mainly stocked with players from Toronto and Montréal. The jerseys of the first team were red for this reason that the second team were white.

The match took place in subdued mood, because, shortly before Bill Barilko disappeared from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had played in the second All- Star team in a plane crash.
