Background

Shortly after the end of the last tour with Peter Gabriel was - despite the post of lead singer initially remained vacant - the work on this album started. However, after numerous candidates appeared as successor Gabriel unsuitable Collins was eventually asked to interpret the title Squonk. This worked so well that they decided quickly to convey Collins as the new singer of the band. Shortly thereafter, the quartet went into the studio to make the recordings for A Trick of the Tail.

Also on A Trick of the Tail Genesis still plays progressive rock. The style change to the "traditional" skirt should be made only after the departure of Steve Hackett 1977. With a ranking of 31 in the North American album charts A Trick of the Tail was the hitherto most successful album to date.
