African Footballer of the Year

From 1970 to 1994, the magazine France Football has named European Footballer of the next year also African Footballer of the year. Since 1992, the African Football Federation elects a CAF Footballer of the Year.

1998 in a multi-stage survey process by the IFFHS African Footballer of the century was also determined and honored at the World Football Gala 1999. On the occasion of the upcoming 50th anniversary of its founding in 2006 led the CAF also an online survey, with which the best African player of the past 50 years ( 1957-2007 ) was sought.

The award of the dignity by the CAF 2008 got into the headlines when Didier Drogba was denied the honor because he had canceled his attendance at the award ceremony because of the participation of his team at the Africa Cup. The Sir Frederic Kanoute therefore received the title, as he was present at the ceremony, as his national team was already eliminated at the African Cup of Nations.
