Andratx

Andratx (pronounced: Andra sealed; Castilian Andratx or Andrach ) is a municipality in the western part of the island of Mallorca. It has an area of 81.5 km ² and 10,748 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). This corresponds to a population density of 132 persons per km ².

The population is concentrated in the main town of the same name off the coast and in the harbor town of Port d' Andratx. Eight peaks are found here, with a height of 319 m ( Talaia of Cap des Llamp ) up to 927 m ( Moleta de s'Esclop ).

Climate

In the year Andratx be registered via precipitation. The driest month is July with an average of 7.9 l / m². The highest rainfall in 24 hours was recorded on September 17, 1988 in Salqueria with 194.4 l / m².

History

The name Andratx in its present form is mentioned documentary for the first time in 1236. Beyond the actual origin of the name, there are however several theories, but to date no universally accepted or occupied.

Ramon Rossello and Jaume Bover found that between the 13th and 19th century, 25 different explanations of the name have been arrested, ranging from the Celtic name Andraquis to the Arabic word indiraq. The men of the community are called Andritxol, the women hot andritxole.

Since the island was plagued by numerous North African pirates in the Middle Ages, the construction of a defense system was required, which was based on the construction of many towers. In the 16th century, a plan was worked out by J. Binimelis who had to review the locations of already established towers and the establishment of new sites to the target. Of the 14 towers on the territory of the municipalities Calvià and Andratx are still 12 available.

Population Development

In 1785, Andratx has seen 4090 inhabitants, in 1900 there were already 7512 people. The lowest population of 4303 in 1950 held. With 8098 people in 1996 thus Andratx was in 12th place of the 53 municipalities of Mallorca.

In 2006, the proportion of foreigners was 29.6 % ( 3,081 ), the proportion of German population was 11.9 % ( 1241 people).

  • The former monastery of La Trapa at 380 m above sea level. At this point, founded in the twenties of the 19th century from France reported Trappist monastery, they had to leave after ten years because it was closed by the state. Some remains of buildings have been preserved. The garden with terracing can still be seen, and the remains of the mighty baobab tree, the former biggest Mallorca, standing beside the monastery ruins.
  • The walk from Port d' Andratx, Sant Elm to La Trapa is the first stage of the GR 221
  • Centro Cultural Andratx, the gallery is one of the major centers for contemporary art in Europe. La Asociación Sa Taronja, on the west side of the city, is one of the few independent culture centers on the island.

Market

There are markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays Pasatge de Son Mas in S'Arracó on the main square.
