Arena, Calabria

Arena is a municipality with 1466 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Vibo Valentia, region Calabria.

The territory of the municipality lies on the banks of the river Marepotamo. It covers an area of 32 km ².

The neighboring municipalities are Acquaro, Dasà, Fabrizia, Gerocarne, Mongiana and Serra San Bruno.

Attractions

The oldest building of the town is a Norman castle dating from the 11th century, later in the 14th and 15th centuries by Conclubet and of the princes Aqua Viva in the 16th - 18th century changed. From the castle standing after an earthquake in 1783, only parts of the corner towers and walls, as well as the medieval aqueduct.

The Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria dei Latini was built in the 17th century. Inside there are two statues of Gennaro Franzese from the 18th century, Cristo Risorto and San Michele and a picture of Caravaggio.

The Chiesa delle Grazie has a Baroque portal and inside some sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries, especially a figure of the Madonna delle Grazie in classic Greek style.
