Mileto

Mileto is an Italian town in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria with 6823 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Mileto located 26 km northeast of Vibo Valentia. The neighboring municipalities are Candidoni ( RC), Dinami, Filandari, Francica, Gerocarne, Jonadi, San Calogero, San Costantino Calabro and Serrata ( RC).

The old Mileto was destroyed in the 1783 earthquake. The exact founding date is unknown. 1063-1068 Roger I had the abbey of the Trinity build. After the earthquake, the city was built 2 km away again. Ruins of the ancient city are still visible.

Attractions

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. In the earthquake of 1908, the cathedral was destroyed and then rebuilt. Inside there is a marble statue of St. Nicholas and grave slabs from the Renaissance.

In the Bishop's Palace, the Museo Archeologico Statale is with finds from the old Mileto.
