Serra San Bruno

Serra San Bruno is a city with 6807 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Vibo Valentia in the Calabria region.

The village is located about 36 km southeast of Vibo Valentia at the foot of Monte Pecoraro ( 1423 meters). The territory of the municipality lies 870 m ü.d.M. and includes 39 km ².

The neighboring municipalities are Arena, Gerocarne, Mongiana, Spadola and Stilo ( RC).

Economy

The population lives from the mining and processing of granite, from forestry in the large surrounding forest region (typical deciduous forest with large mushroom volume) and wood processing. In Serra San Bruno and around large amounts of charcoal are produced in a traditional way.

Attractions

The place is known mainly because of the Carthusian monastery of Santo Stefano, which was built in the late 11th century. In the historical city center lies the Baroque Church of the Addolorata, inside which there is a number of works of art from the Charterhouse are. Many houses of the village are equipped with ornate portals and blacksmith works, a tradition that goes back to the Carthusian monks.
