Nicotera

Nicotera is an Italian town in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria with 6423 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Nicotera is located 27 km southwest of Vibo Valentia. The neighboring municipalities are Candidoni ( RC), Joppolo, Limbadi, Rosarno (RC) and Spilinga. The districts are Comèrconi, Marina, Preitoni and Badia di Nicotera. Nicotera Marina since the 17th century developed as a seaside resort. Nicotera is a bishopric.

History

Paola Orsi dismissed in 1927 after that the location of the port has been ( emporium ) of Medma. This port played a role from the 3rd century BC until the Roman period.

Attractions

The castle is worth seeing. The cathedral dates originally from the Middle Ages, but was rebuilt in 1785. Near the train station, a Roman granite quarry located with unfinished columns. In the village the Meseo Civico Archeologico stands with exhibits from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The weekly market takes place on Sundays and shopkeepers at the top of Nicotera.
