Rosarno

Rosarno is an Italian town in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 14,710 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Rosarno is 62 km northeast of Reggio Calabria on the border with the province of Vibo Valentia. The village lies on a hill overlooking the plain of Gioia on the edge of the Serre Calabresi. The municipality is crossed by the river Mesima, which flows into the mountian to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The municipality consists of the villages of Bosco, Crofala, Scattarreggia, Testa dell'Acqua and Zimbario.

The neighboring municipalities are Candidoni, Cittanova, Feroleto della Chiesa, Gioia Tauro, Laureana di Borrello, Melicucco, Nicotera (VV), Rizziconi, San Ferdinando.

Traffic

Rosarno has a separate connection to the A3 Autostrada del Sole. It also has its own railway station on the railway line Salerno -Reggio Calabria. In Rosarno the branch line along the coast to Tropea and Lamezia Terme branches.

Economy

The city is a commercial and agricultural center. Are grown mostly citrus fruits but also kiwi.

History

Rosarno goes back to the Greek colony Medma that BC was about the 6th century until the 2nd century AD. The medieval Rosarno was only mentioned again in 1037. It had a meaning as castrum to protect the upstream level. 1793, the town was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. Rosarno was raised in 2004 by the President of the Republic to the city.

Policy

Carlo Martelli ( FI) was elected in June 2006 for the mayor. His center-right alliance also provided with 12 of 20 seats, the majority in the City Council. Martelli and other members of the city government were arrested in October 2008 because of links to the Mafia organization 'Ndrangheta. Since then, the church is governed by a set of Region Presidents commission headed by Acting Mayor Domenico Bagnato.

Rosarno is regarded as one of the strongholds of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta. Some important clans like the families Bellocco Pesce and have their base in Rosarno.

After January 7 from work had shot returning African seasonal workers and two people seriously injured, and there were serious riots between immigrants and parts of the local population, in which 67 people 2010 young people, including the son of a ' Ndrangheta head of air rifles were injured and property damage was severe. As a result, a large proportion of immigrants by the police was placed in detention centers in other southern towns of or left on their own the city. In the area around Rosarno up to 5000 immigrants that have been used illegally as seasonal workers in agriculture. Although they scored only one day's salary of about 25 euros, had to pay to the 'Ndrangheta many still pay protection money. Already in 2008, the organization informed MSF about the inhumane housing of immigrants.

On 11 January 2010 a demonstration against racism with 5000 participants, residents and immigrants took place in Rosarno.

Attractions

The place is a ruin of a castle. Next interesting are the small clock tower and the parish church.
