Riace

Riace is a town with 1820 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria.

The neighboring community are Camini and Stignano.

Riace consists of two centers of settlement, the medieval Riace Superiore or Borgo and Riace Marina on the Ionian Sea.

Riace Borgo is the original old settlement situated high in the hills. It has a medieval center with city walls and four surviving gates. Local attractions include the churches of San Nicola di Bari, Santa Caterina and SS Cosma e Damiano.

Riace Marina is a seaside resort by the sea. Off the coast of Riace Marina in 1972, the two bronze statues were found of Riace, which are exhibited in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.

How many places of Calabria suffered Riace high levels of emigration and high unemployment. Since 1998, landed a boat with 218 Kurdish refugees in Riace, it has the by Domenico Lucano, since 2004, Mayor of Riace, co-founded association Città Futura itself the task to resettle refugees in Riace, to offer them a perspective and revive the village. In 2012 there were about 500 immigrants in Riace.

Festivals

The patron saint of Cosmas and Damian will be celebrated from September 25 to 27 with a procession. It is visited by many Roma.

On the coast of Riace Marina, the state highway runs 106 (E 90).
