San Luca

San Luca is a town with 3983 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in Calabria in southern Italy, in the Province of Reggio Calabria.

Geography

The area of San Luca covers 104.12 square kilometers. The place consists of the districts Lentile, Ricciolio, Vorrea, Polsi and strand and lies at the foot of the 1955 m high Aspromonte mountain range at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. The neighboring municipalities are Benestare, Bovalino, Careri, Casignana, Cosoleto, Delianuova, Samo, Sant'Agata del Bianco, Santa Cristina d' Aspromonte and Scido.

Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Polsi

The near San Luca in 1144, founded by Roger II of Sicily, situated on 865 m height Sanctuary is late August and early September of each year, the target of up to 50,000 believers

'Ndrangheta

San Luca is considered a stronghold of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta. By 1991 erupted feud between the families Strangio and Pelle - Romeo - Nirta that previously called for 26 deaths, the town for this vendetta is eponymous. The clashes reached by the Mafia murders of Duisburg on August 15, 2007, Germany.
