Polistena

Polistena is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,657 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. The community is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Reggio Calabria and about 70 kilometers southwest of Catanzaro.

History

The very name points to a Greek origin back ( Polyxene, Polysthene; possibly as " fortified city " - polis, tene ). The origin itself is unknown. Documents the existence of documents is from the 11th century AD. In the Middle Ages the settlement flourished, but the earthquake of 1783 destroyed large parts of the region and also Poli Stena.

Traffic

Polistena Located on the Strada Statale 682 jonio - Tirreno. The Strada Statale 281 and the Strada Statale 536 pass through the town. At the non-electrified railway from Gioia Tauro to Cinquefrondi is the railway station of Polistena. It is a narrow-gauge railway (950 mm rail spacing )

Polistena maintains an intra- Italian partnership with the community Anzola dell'Emilia in the province of Bologna.
