Arthur Shell ( * November 26, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina ) is an American former American football player and coach. He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League ( NFL) with the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders.

Youth

Art Shell was born the son of a miller paper in Charleston. At the age of ten years, his mother died and he and his siblings were raised by his father alone. Over the next few years he became increasingly the education of his four younger siblings. In high school he played football and basketball. In both sports, he was elected to the state selection because of its sporting achievements. After leaving school he received a scholarship to Maryland State College.

Playing career

College career

Arthur Shell also played at college football and basketball. From his football team, he was employed in the first two years of study as a center and as a defensive tackle. In the following two years he was also using time as a tackle on the offensive line. Shell was elected three times in the league selection in 1967 and received his appointment to the All- American.

Professional career

Art Shell was drafted in 1968 by the Oakland Raiders in the third round to 80th place. The coach of the Raiders, John Rauch, put him as a rookie in the special teams the Raiders. In 1968, Shell was able to move with the Raiders in the AFL final. However, the team defeated the trained Weeb Ewbank of the New York Jets with 27:23. In 1990 he was elected to the NFL Coach of the Year.
