Barnsley F.C.

The Barnsley FC ( officially: Barnsley Football Club ), also known as The Tykes ( The dog ), is a traditional football club from Northern England Barnsley. The club, which plays its home games at the 23,009 -seat Oakwell Stadium, playing since 2006 in the second-rate English Football League Championship.

History

The Barnsley FC was founded in 1887 as Barnsley St. Peter's and in 1897 was its current name Barnsley Football Club. The most successful period the club had in the early 20th century, when they reached the final of the English FA Cup twice. After the final was in 1910 still in the replay lost on April 28 against Newcastle United with 0:2 ( first match: 1:1 ) was achieved on April 24, 1912, winning the Cup with a victory over West Bromwich Albion (1:0 by extension in the replay, game 1: 0-0). In the aftermath of the Barnsley FC and forth between the second and fourth English top flight. On February 15, 1936, the club 's FA Cup tie against Stoke City with 40,255 visitors had his up to now highest attendances.

The most successful period in Barnsley 's recent history began in the 1980/81 season with the rise in the then second-rate Second Division and was crowned the first-time promotion to the top division, the Premier League in 1997. In the 2007 /08 season of Barnsley FC reached for surprising victories against Liverpool in the second round and Chelsea in the quarter-finals even the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but failed it against Cardiff City.
