It serves as a bypass of Gronau and then has access to the A 31 This 10.2 km long and 46 -million-euro section of the new line from the border to the A 31 construction period was on 29 March 2004 after eight years to traffic.

Later in the next section continues past as a bypass to Ochtrup. On connection to the highway 70 north of Metelen the new line ended first. On 11 December 2006, construction began on the 5.2 km long gap closure of the rail line between Ochtrup and Steinfurt- Burg Steinfurt, which dates back to plans already in the 1930s. On 5 May 2010 she could be opened to traffic, the construction costs amounted to 21 million euros. The local section of the old B 54 was January 1, 2010, as previously replaced the other two sections, graduated from national road as part of the L 510. This route follows an already existing building longer - section which serves as a bypass road from Burg Steinfurt, Borg Horst, Ancient mountains and Nienberge. After a connection to the A 1 B 54 leads shortly before Munster back to their old course continues in downtown Muenster.

The new line between the Dutch border and Munster should be built as A 314 originally. Therefore, the connection points A 1 and A 31 are expanded as a full shamrocks. The plans for the construction of a 314 A have now been discarded.

In winning the B 54 developed as an extension of the A 4 motorway to the city on high stilts and also bears the nickname Hüttentalstraße. From the winner country it rises in the south to in the High Westerwald and reached at Stein-Neukirch a summit altitude of about 630 meters. Shortly before Limburg, the B 54 combined with the four-lane here B 49, which is popularly known as Long Meil. The southernmost section, from Limburg to Wiesbaden, runs largely through the scenic, but very curvy Aartal in the western Hintertaunus and is therefore called also Aarstraße. From Limburg, Diez and wood home a southern bypass to be built, what the Alttrasse in the Limburg district Blumenrod to be expanded. This is - apart from a few sections - also the official street name to Dürerplatz in Wiesbaden. In Aartal run parallel to the route of the disused Aartalbahn, the Aar Cycle Route and the Aar Crest Trail. Subsequently, the road crosses the Iron Hand and overcomes here the Taunus main ridge 423 meters in height. After a mile-long downhill they finally reached the Dürerplatz the basin of Wiesbaden and leads to the partly six-lane ring road ring church, country house and the main railway station south to the city around. Then, continuing them as Berliner Straße highway-like expanded town towards Wiesbaden heritage home and Federal Highway 66, but ends before the suburbs in the federal highway 455 a.
