Chaykovsky, Perm Krai

Tchaikovsky (Russian Чайковский ) is a city in the Perm region of Russia. It has 82 895 inhabitants ( 14 October 2010) and is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Geography

The city is located in the extreme southwest of the Perm region, 325 km from the capital city of Perm, near the border with the Republic of Udmurtia. The nearest towns are Votkinsk (32 km north) and Sarapul (38 km southwest), both located in Udmurtia.

By Tchaikovsky the Kama, the north of it, forms the Votkinsk reservoir at the confluence with the Saigatka flows. Due to the location of the city between the Kama in the West, the reservoir in the north and the widened by the congestion Saigatka in the East resembles the urban area of ​​Tchaikovsky a peninsula.

History

The city was founded in 1955 on the site of a former village called Saigatka. The reason for the city 's foundation was the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Kama, in the course of which even the Votkinsk reservoir was formed. The power plant was completed in 1965 and is mainly used for power supply to the nearby Udmurtia and the southern Perm territory.

The city was named after the famous composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, who was born nearby, in Votkinsk.

Economy and Transport
