Chevroux

Chevroux is a municipality in the district Broye Vully the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Chevroux is on 454 m above sea level. M., 8 km north of the district main town Payerne ( straight line ). The scattered village extends slightly above the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the Swiss Plateau.

The area of ​​4.4 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel. The very flat lakeshore is accompanied by an up to 500 m wide reed belt and a belt of forest, the additional 300 m wide. Neighboring communities of Chevroux are Grandcour in the Canton of Vaud and Vernay and Gletterens in the Canton of Fribourg.

Population

With 414 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Chevroux is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 90.6 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 6.3 % and 1.3 % speak Polish (as of 2000). The population of Chevroux amounted in 1870 to 429 residents in 1900 to 367 inhabitants. After the population had declined by 1980 to 276 people, a significant population increase was observed again since then.

Economy

Chevroux was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by agriculture village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population, furthermore there are also some commercial fishermen. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. Chevroux is the site of potting soil and fertilizer factory Bachmann Chevroux SA and a boatyard. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Some employed persons are therefore commuters who work primarily in the area Payerne.

Tourism

Chevroux is a popular resort with a campground and around 100 weekend and holiday cottage near the lake. It has a marina with over 1000 moorings.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares, yet is within easy reach of Grandcour. By Postbus course Chevroux has connection with Payerne. The village is accessible by passenger sailing on Lake Neuchâtel. Because of the shallow lake shore is the ship dock at the end of a 700 m long jutting into the lake dam.

History

The lake in the municipality of Chevroux was inhabited in the Stone Age. There were 13 lakefront and lake-dwellings excavated from the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. Even in Roman times there was north-east of the modern village, a small settlement. Near the lake shore a Roman cemetery was discovered.

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1286 under the name Chevroth. Later, the names Chevros (1310 ), Chevrod ( 1453) and Chevroud ( 1725) appeared. The place name is derived from the Old French word Chevrot ( goat) and refers to a place where goats were bred.

Since the Middle Ages Chevroux belonged to the rule Grandcour, in the 14th century for some time also to Vaumarcus. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Avenches, where it formed an exclave together with Grandcour. In the 18th century a Indiennemanufaktur was founded, a branch running of production in Cortaillod. Especially in the period around 1770-1785, the canvas painting was booming. After the collapse of the ancien régime Chevroux belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Payerne.

Attractions

Dating back to the 15th century reformed church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste was remodeled in the 18th century. Its counterpart in a wooden storage. In the center some stately farmhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
