On 3 June 2005, the Dutchman Hans Westerhof was appointed coach of Chivas. Even this did not bring the hoped-for turn. At the end of the season the Goats were in last place in the Western Conference with just four wins from 32 games. Westerhoff was then not busy for the next season. The first part in U.S. Open Cup ended, after a victory against the Charlotte Eagles, with the defeat against Los Angeles Galaxy in the second round.

With a second place in the Western Conference, the team again reached the play-offs and just like in the previous two years they lost in the first encounter. For the first time nominated Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan players for the MLS All -Star Game. Kljestan was this season one of the strongest players on the team and was voted into the best team of the league at the end of the season.

The 2009 season ended with a fourth place in the Western Conference. Zach Thornton took over the position of the root after goalkeeper Brad Guazan moved to Aston Villa. Martin Vasquez took over at the end of the season the office of the new head coach. Radosavljević left by mutual agreement before the team.

The Chivas started the 2010 season with two defeats. At the end of the regular season, the team finished last in the Western Conference. Only DC United, with less points in the overall table. Due to this poor performance Martin Vasquez tenure was released after just one year.
