Coat of arms of Grenada

The Official Coat of Arms of Grenada was awarded with the island gained independence in 1974.

Description

The crest shows a shield divided by a golden cross, with its center at Columbus' ship Santa Maria is in four parts.

In the first and the last field - top left and bottom right - is the golden British lion against a red background.

In the other two fields located in front of a green background a golden crescent, from which a lily grows.

On the shield is crowned by a golden helmet on which wreath of branches of bougainvillea bush are. Inside the ring are seven red roses, which represent the seven churches of Grenada.

As a sign holder is an armadillo, standing in front of a corn stem and on the other side of a pigeon standing in front of a bunch of bananas.

All this is located on a green landscape with a lake, on which a banner with the English national motto Grenada winds:

The colors of the shield are the same as in the flag of Grenada.

Symbolism

Lily and crescent in the second and third fields are the symbols of the Virgin Mary.

The lion in the first and fourth field is a sign of strength and is reminiscent of the former British supremacy.

The plate holder stand for the flora and fauna.

The pedestal form the highest peak, Mount Saint Catherine, and the largest lake, the Grand Etang Lake.
