Coat of arms of Nicaragua

As a coat of arms of Nicaragua is the state emblem: In a golden triangle is a green mountain chain of five volcanoes that lies between two blue seas. Over the mountains hovering in front of a bright blue sky a red Phrygian cap, which is surrounded by a silver halo. About the cap is a rainbow swings in the colors green, blue, yellow and red, the triangle is a circle surrounded by the lettering República de Nicaragua (top) and América Central ( below).

The design of the volcanic chain and rainbow varies, the surrounding lettering can be found in gold and blue.

The coat of arms dates back to the emblem of the Central American Confederation, which already contained all the motifs of today. When Nicaragua withdrew from the Federation, it led the emblem on, in 1854 the decision was made, however, for a version with only one volcano, over which a ring with the inscription Libertad, religious, Trabajo ( " freedom, order, work") floats. On September 5, 1908, the original badge was reintroduced by decree and the lettering América Central added. Today's version was set in 1971. It is depicted on the flag of Nicaragua and distinguishes these as of the flags of Honduras and El Salvador.

The equilateral triangle is a symbol of equality. The five volcanoes represent the five Central American states of the Confederacy, the two oceans are the Atlantic and the Pacific that surround Central America. The Phrygian cap was headgear of the Jacobins during the French Revolution and became the symbol of freedom and independence, particularly in Latin America. The rainbow is a symbol of peace.

The coat of arms of El Salvador is the Nicaraguan still very similar to the modern coat of arms of the other former members of the Central American Confederation access similar motifs. The Phrygian cap is still part of the coat of arms of Argentina, Colombia and West Virginia as well as the flags of Paraguay, Haiti, the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey as well as the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.
