Coat of arms of Martinique

The coat of arms of Martinique, a French overseas departments and a French overseas region, shows in blue with a white cross gevierten plates in all fields a white crooked serpent.

Importance

It is very similar to the French merchant flag before the year 1789. The L-shaped snakes are probably an allusion to the "L" of Lucia, as Martinique was originally co-managed with St. Lucia. The snake is a type of American Terciopelos ( Bothrops lanceolatus ), a native of Martinique Viper.

Criticism

The local independence party Mouvement des democrates et des Ecologistes pour une Martinique Indépendante suggests making use of the old coat of arms is a symbol of racism, as it was also used as a flag on slave ships and was attached to the gendarmerie uniforms as coat of arms.
