Cycling at the 1908 Summer Olympics

In the IV Olympic Games 1908 in London six cycling competitions were held. All races took place on the 660 yards ( 603.50 m) long cement circular track at White City Stadium. Road races were not advertised as such were banned under the UK Road Traffic Act.

There were the rules of the National Cyclists' Union of England and Wales to apply, not those of the World Federation UCI. The 1000 - meter race was not considered due to exceeding the time limit of 105 seconds. In all races ( with the exception of the team pursuit ), only the time of the winners was stopped.

Date: July 14 and 15

At the start were 46 riders from nine countries. The winners of the 16 heats (two or three drivers ) qualified for the second round. These included four races, with the winner qualified for the final. There was a time limit of 70 seconds.

5 km

Date: 17 and 18 July

At this race 42 riders from eight countries took part. The winners of the seven prelims qualified for the final. There was a time limit of 9:25 minutes.

20 km

Date: July 14,

It was attended by 44 riders from eleven countries participated in this competition. Could qualify for the final, the winner of six heats, in addition, there were three pacemaker. Ins goal came four of the six finalists.

100 km

Date: 15th, 16th and 18 July

It was attended by 43 riders from eleven countries. In two preliminary heats 16 finalists were determined ( in each case the first six and a first running four runners who had led the most laps ). A Canadian was re-nominated by protest. The finale took place in the pouring rain, parts of the inner track were under water. Nine of the 17 finalists had to abandon the race.

2000 m tandem

Date: July 13 and 15

The competition was attended by 17 pairs from seven countries. The qualification was in two stages: In the first round seven races took place. The winners came together in two races in the second round. Qualified for the final were then the two winners as well as the fastest runner-up couple.

1980 yards Team Pursuit

Reported were originally seven teams, but the start of the first round appeared only five teams of four riders. Great Britain and Canada came on without a fight, as the teams of Belgium and the United States refrained from starting. The Dutch profited from a bye; only the Germans had to play and prevailed against France.

In the semi-final race against Great Britain gained Canada and Germany against the Netherlands. In the final, the British won by a clear margin. The bronze medal went to the Canadians, as they had been the faster losing team in the semifinals.
