Du Hirte Israel, höre, BWV 104

Violin I / II; Viola; BC

Cornelius Becker

Shepherd of Israel, listen to ( BWV 104), is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Formation

Bach composed the cantata in his first year in Leipzig for Sunday Misericordias Domini, the second Sunday after Easter, and led them on 23 April 1724 on.

Topic

The work begins with a quote from Ps 80.2 EU. The psalm asks God as the Shepherd of Israel for deliverance. The text of the Tanakh is referenced as the Good Shepherd in the New Testament, especially in the so -called " pastoral speech " from the Gospel of John (Jn 10 EU), to Jesus Christ. He also appears in the cantata, which speaks in the first three parts of God, in parts 4-5 of Jesus. The cantata closes with a simple chorale, a paraphrase of Psalm 23 by Cornelius Becker from 1598. This psalm also speaks to God, his visual language but has been based in Christianity to Jesus.

As in some of his other works, and how often the case in Baroque, Bach emphasizes the image of the shepherd by the stresses peaceful and pastoral character of the music.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is occupied by two soloists, tenor and bass, four-part choir, two oboe d' amore, Waist ( in Baroque tenor position ), two violins, viola and basso continuo.

Special

It is in this lesser-known work by one of the larger-scale cantatas of Bach. The repeated mention of the piece in Maarten 't Hart's best-selling novel The raging around the world may have contributed in recent years to an increased level of awareness.
