Elbingen

Elbingen is a municipality in the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Wallmerod.

Geography

The community lies in the Westerwald between Montabaur and Westerburg. Elbingen is surrounded by forest with many hiking and cycling trails. The neighboring municipalities are Härtlingen, Hahn am See and Moravia. The border with Hesse runs about six kilometers east of the city.

History

Elbingen was first mentioned in 1383 as Elmennyngen and is located in the territory of the former Niederlahngaues, the dominion of the Count of Nassau. The place name is derived from the ancient name of Alemanni, which suggests here on an early Germanic settlement. Only later did the name Elbingen refused to name the Elf (also Elbbach ) that the major Westerwald River, which flows through the district. In a document of 1383 Friedrich is called by Elmennyngen, but no crest is down from this noble race survived. More gender had here so the possession of Hattert, the Reifenberg (Coat of Arms Red / Silver) and of Dehrn. The long affiliation with the Nassau country rule was interrupted in 1564 when the parish of salt, and so also Elbingen, came to the Electorate of Trier. Due to the Imperial Diet Losing Elbingen 1803 fell to Nassau -Weilburg and belonged from 1806 to 1866 to the Duchy of Nassau, then in Prussia the province of Hesse -Nassau.
