Fenestrelle

Fenestrelle ( Piedmontese Fenestrele, Finistrelas Occitan ) is a municipality with 565 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Turin (TO ), Region Piedmont.

Geography

The village lies at an altitude of 1215 m above sea level in Chisone, some 40 km (air line) west of Turin. The municipality covers an area of 49 km ². Patron saint of the village is the St. Louis of France.

Neighboring municipalities are Meana di Susa, Mattie, Usseaux, Pragelato, Roure and Massello.

Attractions

  • The baroque parish church was built at the instigation of Louis XIV and opened on August 25, 1689. It is dedicated to Saint Louis of France.
  • The place is especially known for here built 1728-1850 mountain fortress. The complex is the largest of its kind in Europe, consisting of a connected by steps and pathways series of individual fortifications. The connection stairs have a total of over 4000 levels. The system from the military architect Ignazio Giuseppe Bertola Roveda was built to defend against a possible French invasion of Piedmont along the Chisone.
