History

Origins

The flag is derived from a seal of Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, who in an uprising in the 15th century led the Albanians against the Ottoman Empire and a brief period of independence ( 1443-1478 ) brought. Skanderbegs eagle again goes back to Byzantine models. And in honor of Scanderbeg, who fought for 25 years against the Turks and held a total of 25 battles against them until his death, one has the double-headed eagle awarded 25 springs.

The double-headed eagle was handed down among the Albanians in Italy, the Arbëreshen in modern times. An eagle can also be found on the grave of a nephew of Skanderbeg in Naples. The flag appeared at the end of the 19th century in connection with the rise of national consciousness of Albanians in Albanian publications back on that were published outside of the Ottoman Empire.

In April 1911 Gjon Luli Dedë called in Deçiq at Tuzi from the country's independence when he was with his men, the Malesori in the two-front battle against Slavs and Turks. This was the first time in 500 years that the flag was shown with the black eagle on a red background again. On November 28, 1912 was proclaimed by the leaders of the Albanian national movement in Vlora once again the independence, was in 1913 also recognized.

Ekrem Bey Vlora (1885-1964) stated in his memoirs the hoisting of its flag after the Declaration of Independence describes in detail because had been " brought quite incorrect versions in circulation '

"You promised me to want to put them back in a few days, as soon as Mrs. Marigo Posio (a large, advertizing efficient, democratic patriot from Korçë ) finished sewing the new flag and would have embroidered. On November 28, the main object of the day, " was in fact the flag " has been a symbol of sovereignty, forget with that typical Albanian Oriental carelessness. Most did not like that flag looked like. No man had ever seen or used. No one had an in Vlorë. Perplexed looked at each other the great founder of the state. As my friend Hydai Efendi came forward and reported that in the bedroom Ekrem Bey on the bed wall an Albanian flag was nailed in a beautiful frame. He asked if they could take them despite the absence of the owner. Ismail Bey agreed, and so to me solemnly by Don Aladro Kastriota in Paris donated flag wandered into the adjoining house of Konaks into the hands of Ismail Bey, who gave Murat Bey Toptani with the bidding, to hoist her as he stood at the window next to it.
