Your final shape was determined by the National Council Act of 18 February 1993.

Description

The national flag is based on the red-white flag as well as the pan-Slavic Slovak colors white-blue - red. In the leech, the flag bears the coat of arms, which ranges over the blue stripes in the white and red stripes and reaches half the height of the flag.

History

The original Slovak flag in the Middle Ages consisted of two horizontal stripes in red and white. In general, red was here above.

The oldest form of " Slovak " flag has been preserved in the seal of the city Neutra from the time of King Béla IV ( 1235-1270 ). It was a white -lying double cross against a red background.

The present form was created during the revolution of 1848/1849, when the Slovaks aspects of Vienna against the Hungarians fought (see Slovakian uprising ). On April 23, 1848, the first time was a " Slovak flag " swung as a national flag in Brezová pod Bradlom during a theatrical performance. The white-red, or red - white flag was still in use several months. These colors can be traced back to the time around 1230.

In August 1848, a blue stripe was added. On September 18 flags were set with the three colors in different variations in Velka nad Veličkou. The blue strip was taken from the Russian and Croatian flag. The Russians were regarded as the protector of the Slavs, the Croats as the sister nation of Slovaks in the Kingdom of Hungary. Some of the flags of 1848 also contributed to the Hungarian national coat of arms, but often the color of the three mountains ( Fatra, Matra, Tatra ) was changed to blue. It should be expressed that the Slovaks then coveted no separation of Hungary, but only a recognition of their nation under the Hungarian crown.

In 1868, the white-blue- red color sequence was set as Slovak tricolor.

After the establishment of Czechoslovakia traditional Czech white-red flag was complemented by a blue triangle in 1920, after long deliberations, which should symbolize Slovakia, as the Slovaks yes since 1848 had the blue stripes across their flag. Thus, the Flag of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Republic has also adopted today was born. The flag of the Czech Republic has so remained a powerful symbol of Slovakia in its flag.

As of 1938, the Slovak autonomy movement used a red double cross in a white circle on a blue background as autonomy flag, which was later adopted by the HSĽS - SSNJ and the nationalist Hlinka Guard. The First Slovak Republic used from 1939 to 1945, the white-blue- red tricolor. After the Velvet Revolution today's flag was introduced in 1990 (with or without the coat of arms ). The use of the State Emblem of the flag was established in 1992 necessary to avoid confusion with the flag of Russia.
