Flag of Bulgaria

The flag of Bulgaria consists of three equal horizontal stripes: white on top, green in the middle and red on the bottom. These colors stand for freedom and peace (white), the fertility and nature of Bulgaria (green ) and for the blood that was shed in the struggle for freedom (red).

The flag in its present form was first introduced on 16 April 1879 had existed until 1944. In 1947 the coat of arms was inserted in the upper left corner. Your old form it was returned on 27 November 1990.

History

First and Second Bulgarian Empire

According to current knowledge, the Bulgarians used a cut-off ponytail as a banner. After the Christianization began to use flags to those used in the Byzantine Empire like the First Bulgarian Kingdom. There is no precise information on the flags in the second Bulgarian Empire. During the Ottoman rule the Haiduks and voivode used a green flag with a golden lion in the middle and the words " Свобода или смърт. " ( Freedom or Death )

During the Bulgarian Revival

The first flag with the colors green, white and red ( horizontal tricolor in that order) is first used from 1861 to 1862, founded by Georgi Rakovsky " First Bulgarian Legion " in Belgrade. The first flag with the present arrangement of colors was sewn in the Romanian city of Brăila for the Bulgarian volunteers in the " Russian-Turkish war."

After the liberation

After the liberation of the colors and their arrangement were set in today's Bulgarian flag in the First Bulgarian Constitution of April 16, 1879. In 1947 the coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria was inserted in the upper left corner of the white field. On 27 November 1990 this was removed from the flag; in the Fourth Bulgarian Constitution, the flag was set in the present form.
