Garrotxa

The comarca of Garrotxa, in the province of Girona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). The community association has an area of ​​735.4 km ² and 55,339 inhabitants (2009 ).

Location

The community association is located in the eastern part of Catalonia, north-west of the provincial capital of Girona. It is bordered on the northeast by the comarca of Alt Empordà, in the east on Pla de l' Estany, on the southeast by Gironès, in the south of Selva, in the southwest on Osona, on the northwest by Ripollès and in the extreme north of the Republic of France. Together with the Comarcas Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Gironès, Pla de l' Estany, Selva and Ripollès forms the region 's territory Comarques giro ines. About 150 km to the southwest lies Barcelona.

The district is located in the Pyrenees and can be divided separated by the river Fluvia in two scenic zones: the Alta Garrotxa ( dt: Upper Garrotxa ), in the western and northern part forms a rugged, rocky and inaccessible terrain with ravines, crevices and caves. In the center of the circle lies the nature reserve the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone, an area with more than forty wooded volcano whose crater edges protrude into the height 10-160 m. The diameter of the crater varied 300-1500 m. About 11,500 years ago, the volcano Croscat broke out last time. In 1985, the volcanic zone of the Catalan Parliament was declared a natural park.

Vegetation

Predominant trees are oaks, cork oaks, holm oaks and beeches.

Economy

The main industry is farming, especially the attitude of cattle on pastures, but also for pigs and sheep. Industrial companies in the textile, meat products, paper and leather industries have located in the comarca.
