Maresme
The comarca of Maresme, in the province of Barcelona, the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). The community association has an area of 398.9 km ² and 426 565 inhabitants (2009 ).
Location
The community association is located in the southeastern part of Catalonia, between Barcelona and the Costa Brava. It is bordered on the northeast by the comarca of Selva, in the north of Vallès Oriental, on the west by Barcelonès and on the south by 48 km long coast of the Mediterranean. Together with the Comarcas Alt Penedès, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Garraf, Vallès Occidental and Vallès Oriental is the region 's territory Àmbit Metropolità de Barcelona.
Maresme is a narrow coastal strip at the foot of the slopes and the Catalan coastal ranges, Serralada Litoral. The mountain ranges of San Mateu, Corredor and Montnegre. The latter two form a natural park, the Parc Natural del Montnegre i el Corredor. In the east, the river forms a natural border with the Tordera comarca of Selva. In the south of the Maresme is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. Here you will find long sandy beaches, interrupted by several small streams that flow down from the mountains mentioned above.
The Maresme is divided into two equal halves: The eastern part of the Alt Maresme, lies between the river and the community Tordera Arenys de Mar. The western part of the Baix Maresme, is located between the municipalities of Caldes d' Estrac and Montgat. The capital city of Mataró is located in the Baix Maresme.
Economy
Mataró is a city with a long industrial tradition. In the region of operations of the textile, metal, chemical, food and building industries are located. From rather small importance is agriculture. Crops grown vegetables and flowers. Through tourism in the coastal communities, the service sector has become an important source of income. The western communities of Maresme lie within the catchment area of Barcelona and have become dormitory towns.
