Noguera (comarca)

The comarca of Noguera, in the province of Lleida of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain). The community association has an area of ​​1784.1 km ² and 40,213 inhabitants (2009 ). By area, Noguera is the largest comarca of Catalonia.

Location

The community association located in the west of Catalonia, northeast of the provincial capital, Lleida. It is bordered on the north by the Pallars Jussà, to the east of Alt Urgell, Solsonès and Segarra, in the south of Urgell and Pla d' Urgell, in the southwest on Segrià and to the northwest by the Autonomous Community of Aragon. Together with the Comarcas Garrigues, Pla d' Urgell, Segarra and Urgell Segrià forms the region 's territory Ponent.

The Comarca is 2 parts, the upper Noguera in the north and the lower Noguera in the south. The upper Noguera is located in the mountain range Serra del Montsec, which is the Pyrenees upstream. The lower Noguera is in the plane la Plana, this is located in the northeastern part of the Catalan sink. The middle reaches of the river Segre flows through the upper Noguera, from west to east, to the middle of the region. There, the river changes direction and flows in a southwesterly direction through the lower Noguera. The two tributaries of the Segre, the Noguera Ribagorzana and Noguera Pallaresa be accumulated in the upper Noguera in several dams. The Noguera Ribagorzana forms the western boundary of the comarca.

Economy

Agriculture and Livestock is an important source of income in the region. In the fertile plains of grain, feed, fruit, vegetables, almond and olive groves. The sheep and pigs, but also cattle and poultry breeding are important. Companies in the construction, textile, metal and paper industry and the food and wood processing industries have settled in Noguera.
