Gavrilov Posad

Gavrilov Posad (Russian Гаврилов Посад ) is a small town in Ivanovo Oblast (Russia) with 6434 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located at the eastern end of a spur of the Moscow ridge about 85 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Ivanovo at the mouth of the river Woimiga in the Irmes in the river system of the Volga.

Gavrilov Posad is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1434 as a village Gawrilowskoje documented. Maybe the village was founded in the early 13th century and from the Grand Duke Vladimir Vsevolod "Big Nest" after the baptismal name of his son Svyatoslav, Gavriil, named.

1609 the village belonged to the Russian Imperial Court as Gavrilova sloboda.

1789, the city charter was granted under the name Gawrilowski Posad; the present form of the name became common to only a beginning of the 20th century. In the 19th century still important regional trading point, stagnated the development of the city as a result, compared with other cities in the area.

The city has a museum of local history.

Economy and infrastructure

Gavrilov Posad is the center of an agricultural region. There are smaller companies in the food and textile industry.

Not far from there is a stud on which the race Vladimir Heavy Draft (Russian Wladimirski Tjaschelowos ) is grown (see coat of arms ).

The city lies on the opened on this section 1899 railway ( Moscow ) Belkowo - Ivanovo ( 238 route km from Moscow).
