Plyos, Ivanovo Oblast

Pljos (Russian Плёс ) is a small town in Ivanovo Oblast (Russia) with 2340 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 70 km northeast of Ivanovo Oblasthauptstadt on the right bank of the Volga, which cuts through the Pljos - Rostov Endmoränenzug here and forms the so-called Pljoser goal.

Pljos belongs to Rajon Priwolschsk. It is one of the smallest cities in Russia.

History

A place of site of the present town was first mentioned in the second half of the 12th century. This was destroyed in 1237 by the troops of Batu Khan.

As the actual creation year is 1410, as here was a fortress for the protection of Kostroma and Moscow.

The town developed in the 17th and 18th century as a trading center especially for linen and other fabrics. In 1778 he became a town.

The economic importance of the city waned after 1871, the railway from Moscow was passed over in Ivanovo further south, Kineschma instead of reaching the Volga in Pljos. For this, the town developed in the last quarter of the 19th century, a popular summer resort of the wealthy circles of Russia, particularly in Moscow.

Meanwhile Pljos was because of the small population and loss of administrative functions as a village (exact year unknown ), but in 1925 received a city charter again.

Culture and sights

Pljos is one of the best preserved and most picturesque small towns on the Volga. It belongs to the "Golden Ring" and is available in its entirety conservation area ( City Sapowednik ).

Here are the Assumption Cathedral ( Успенский собор / Uspensky Sobor ) from the end of the 17./Anfang of the 18th century, the Holy Trinity Church ( Троицкая церковь / Troitskaya Tserkov ) of 1808, the Church of the Resurrection ( Воскресенская церковь / Woskressenskaja Tserkov ) of 1817 and Barbara's Church ( Варваринская церковь / Warwarinskaja Tserkov ) of 1821 high with 35-meter bell tower. The city has a museum of local history and an art gallery with attached Isaak Levitan Museum.

Economy and infrastructure

Industry does not exist in Pljos. The city is the health resort and tourist destination. The Volga cruises make here Station. The city strives to regain its tourist reputation from the early 20th century.

The nearest railway station is Furmanov nearly 40 kilometers southwest along the route Yaroslavl - Ivanovo, from where the city can also be reached by road.
