Germán Busch Province

Germán Busch is a province in the southeastern part of the Department of Santa Cruz in the lowlands of the South American Andean Republic of Bolivia. The province was named after Germán Busch Becerra.

Location

The province is bordered on the north by the province Ángel Sandoval, in the northwest of the province of Chiquitos, on the southwest by the province of Cordillera, to the south by the Republic of Paraguay, and on the east by the Republic of Brazil.

Population

The population of the province of Germán Busch has risen in the past two decades by more than half:

42.5 percent of the population are younger than 15 years. 80.7 percent of the population speaking Spanish, 6.4 percent Quechua, Aymara, and 2.2 percent (1992).

15.8 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 1.2 percent in mining, 8.0 percent in industry, 75.0 percent in services ( 2001).

86.3 percent of the population are Catholics, 11.0 percent are Protestant (1992).

29.3 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 31.9 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

Economy

The economy of the province rests mainly on agriculture, along with the extraction of mineral resources such as iron ore and magnesium plays an increasing role. The iron ore deposits in the mountain El Mutún is now regarded as one of the most important deposits in the world, to be developed by the Indian company Jindal Steel.

The province is divided into the following three counties ( bolivian: municipios ):

  • The municipality of El Carmen Rivero Tórrez ( recently set up) - 5,054 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio Puerto Quijarro - 18,574 inhabitants
  • Municipio Puerto Suárez - 15 706 inhabitants
