Grant County (Oregon)

Grant County is a county located in the state of Oregon of the United States of America with 7445 inhabitants and a population density of 0.6 inhabitants per square kilometer ( 2010). The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Canyon City.

Geography

The County is located in the central north -east of Oregon, is in the north about 400 miles from Washington, to the East and about 350 km from Idaho and has an area of ​​11,731 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Malheur County, Harney County, Crook County, Wheeler County, Morrow County, Umatilla County, Union County and Baker County.

In Grant County several conservation areas are under federal administration. At the John Day River is a part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and there are three Wilderness Areas: North Fork John Day Wilderness, Strawberry Mountain Wilderness and part of the Black Canyon Wilderness ( she sits in Wheeler County continued ).

History

Grant County was formed on October 14, 1864 from parts of Wasco County and Umatilla County. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States and Commander in Chief of the Union armies in the American Civil War.

After the first discovery of gold in 1862 at Whiskey Flat, the population increased within 10 days to over 1000 prospectors who settled along the Canyon Creek. Canyon City was considered at the time as the largest city in Oregon.
