Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense

Grêmio - Grêmio Foot -Ball Porto officially Alegrense - is a football club from Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The club gained international prominence when he was in the 1980s and 90s, the World Cup and twice won the Copa Libertadores.

Their home ground is the Arena do Grêmio that holds 60 540 places. It was opened as part of a friendly match, in which Grêmio against the German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV and took a 2-1 win, on December 8, 2012. History

On September 7, 1903 held in Porto Alegre a football game of the Sport Club Rio Grande, the first Brazilian football club, instead. One of the spectators was Cândido Dias, an entrepreneur from Sorocaba, São Paulo. On May 19, 1935 Grêmio won a match against FC Santos, and was the first team from Rio Grande do Sul was against a " Paulista " team win ( a club from São Paulo).

On May 3rd, 1981 Grêmio won the first time the Brazilian Championship, after São Paulo FC was defeated in the finals.

In 1983, the first international title be achieved. In the final of the Copa Libertadores Peñarol was struck from Uruguay. That same year, Grêmio won the World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Hamburger SV.

1989 Grêmio won the inaugural Copa do Brasil in the final against Sport Club do Recife. A legend among the Gremistas is the 6-1 victory in the semi-final second leg against Flamengo.

The club had to descend 1991 after a very poor season in Serie B, but returned in 1993 back into the Serie A.

In 1995 again the Copa Libertadores was recovered. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was at that time, final opponents Atletico Nacional Medellin in Colombia. In the match for the World Cup to Grêmio was defeated, however, in the penalty shootout Ajax Amsterdam.

On December 15, 1996 Grêmio scored the second Brazilian Championship title after the final victory against Portuguesa.

After the 2004 season was ended as the last, Grêmio got down to Serie B for the second time. On November 26, 2005 Grêmio beat in a dramatic game in which four players were excluded Grêmio Náutico Capibaribe 1-0 and thus won the championship of the series B. Since the 2006 season, Grêmio plays in the Serie A and promptly won in both 2006 and 2007, the Campeonato Gaúcho.

In the Copa Libertadores 2007 Grêmio could reach the final, the Boca Juniors had to be there but to admit defeat.

On 17 July 2007 the team was to fly with the TAM Linhas Aéreas Flight 3054 - to an away game after São Paulo. At the last minute, however, was reclassified, and the team thus escaped a plane crash in which 199 people, including a former president of the local rivals Internacional, were killed.

After the dismissal of Caio Júnior, who was coach of Grêmio only for a few weeks, the club on 21 February 2012 announced that Vanderlei Luxemburgo has signed a one year contract as coach. Due to the overwhelmingly positive balance of Luxenburgo whose contract was extended for another two years. On June 29, 2013, the club announced the dismissal of Vanderlei Luxemburgo. His successor is Renato Portaluppi also known as Renato Gaúcho.
