Geography

Geographical location

Geographically enough Hinterzarten 1400 m above sea level. NN and extends to the Feldberg, the 1,493 m above sea level. NN highest peak of the Black Forest, and to the south-eastern end of Lake Titisee, at 850 m above sea level. NN. The lowest point is the star rank with 740 m above sea level. NN. History

1148 was first documented with the consecration of the Oswaldkapelle in Hell Valley, the nucleus of Hinterzarten parish. In the 13th century it was a popular place of pilgrimage, because a sulfur source promised healing effect. A mineral content of the water from the source, which has been in the sulfur mat between Erlenbrucker road and Zartenbach, they later could not prove. This church was, as well as the recently rebuilt, already called Mary in the Tender. Because the road through the Hell Valley, the secular bailiwick was to the 18th century as the background of the road referred to, whereas the adjacent Breitnau was called before the road. Economy and infrastructure

Hinterzarten thrives on tourism, forestry and grazing, in summer offers hiking opportunities. Hinterzarten has 3 ski lifts and several kilometers of cross country ski trails.

Hinterzarten is also the Black Forest Freiburg -Bodensee - transverse path that leads from Freiburg to Konstanz and is attractive for long-distance hikers.
