Georg Thoma

Georg Thoma ( born August 20, 1937 in Hinterzarten ) is a former German ski jumpers and Nordic combined. His nephew is the former ski jumper Dieter Thoma. The Olympic Training Center Freiburg, Black Forest was named after him.

Career

Thoma visited the elementary school and then worked as a logger until he was appointed to the Mittenwalder mountain troops. After the Mittenwalder mountain troops, he worked at Hinterzarten post. He mastered his work in the summer with the bike and in the winter with all-path boards. Even as a child began with the Thoma Skiing on, enters the age of 14 his first skiing competitions and opted for the Nordic Combined. He was also an excellent ski jumper and cross-country skiers.

In 1953 he came with the District Youth Skiing on the Feldberg for the first time with an organized competitive sport in touch. In 1957 he won for the third time the German youth title in the combination and jumping in Winterberg, but in the long run he was beaten by Rudolf Maier. In 1958 he went for the first time with the national team at the Nordic World Ski Championships Lahti, where he was 16th in the Nordic combined and ski jumping 27.

After an iron training, he was nominated for the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley and was Olympic champion in the Nordic combined. 1960, 1961 and 1963 Thoma was three times German champion in ski jumping. In 1963 to 1965 he was winner at Holmenkollen. In his second Olympic Winter Games in 1964 in Innsbruck, he was able to win the bronze medal once again. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 1966, he became world champion in the Nordic combined.

After his playing career, he stayed true to the skiing and competed in several fun runs. He participated six times in the Vasaloppet in Sweden. When Vasaloppet in March 1980, he finished almost 12,000 runners the 79th Place. A year later, he made a run time of 4:32:66 hours. With 45 years he was the Black Forest Champion in 15 -km cross-country skiing. He also jumped on smaller hills 60 meters and on flying hills up to 130 meters. Later, he was also a TV commentator.

Private

Thoma has been married to his wife Anne Marie and has a grown daughter, Marie - Louise. In his spare time he is in the summer on the bike, on skis go.
