Sverre Stenersen

Sverre Stenersen ( born June 18, 1926 in Målselv, † December 17, 2005 ) was a Norwegian skier who was successful in the Nordic combined and ski jumping in the individual disciplines and cross-country skiing.

Career

Stenersen celebrated his first success at the Norwegian Championships 1951 in Narvik, where he won the bronze medal in the individual Nordic Combined behind Simon Slåttvik and Kjetil Maardalen.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952, which were also seen as Nordic World Ski Championships, started Stenersen in cross country and in the combination. After missing it past in individual over 18 km above the 27th place, he won in a single combination behind his compatriot Simon Slåttvik and the Finn Heikki Hasu the bronze medal. He was still after jumping to second place, but could in the long run achieve only ninth. In the Nordic World Ski Championships 1954 in Falun, he surprisingly won his first world title. In the same year, he also also celebrated his victory at the Norwegian Championships, which he was able to defend five times in 1958 for the first time.

In Cortina d' Ampezzo he won his first and only Olympic gold medal in the combined at the Olympic Winter Games in 1956 and also thus defending his title from 1954. Moreover, he started for the first time at the ski jumping and jumped in a single of the normal hill on the 35th place. Two years later, at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1958 he won behind Paavo Korhonen again the silver medal.

As early as 1955, a year after his world title Stenersen was awarded the Holmenkollen medal.
